[ad#ad-1]Today marked the passing of a great vocalist and a lovely lady, Etta James passed away after a long battle with cancer. “This is a tremendous loss for the family, her friends and fans around the world,” said longtime manager Lupe De Leon, who confirmed the news to CNN. “She was a true original who could sing it all – her music defied category. I worked with Etta for over 30 years. She was my friend and I will miss her always.”
Born Jamesetta Hawkins, the Los Angeles native began singing in her church choir at age five. By the time she was 14, she was singing lead in the doo-wop group Peaches, and recorded her first #1 rhythm and blues hit, “The Wallflower (Dance with Me Henry).” The song’s huge success attracted the attention of soul singer Little Richard, who invited James to go on tour with him in 1956. Shortly after, James launched what would be a life-long and legendary solo career.She was best known for 1961 hit song, “At Last,” which earned her a spot in the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999.
