The state of the mobile market 2011

It’s been a massive year for mobile tech! We’ve seen Web OS become Web Open Source, love what they did there; WP7 Mango got released, which is apparently a big deal; Ice Cream Sandwich has been released to the world and the iPhone 4S was a massive disappointment. RIM is apparently still around but I don’t believe the rumors.

For the four big players: IOS, Android, WP7 and Blackberry 2011 has been a pretty interesting year. Steve Jobs’ death has been one of the big events of the year, and it has certainly put a flavor on how the companies are going to be in 2012. I personally think that his death affected Apple much more than it has been speculated. Let’s face it the iPhone 4S was a massive anti-climax. Even the most devout Apple fan-boy did a slight double take when it was released and let out a soft exclamation of disappointment. But that’s just the iPhone 4S, much of the rest of this year has been full of wonderful updates, surprises, evolutions and improvements.

WP7 had its Mango update, I have never used WP7 for more than five minutes in a shop, but the interface is pretty slick and according to all my mates with WP7 devices Mango has shunted the OS into relevance for early 2012, which is nice. I don’t mean to sound dismissive, I love the fact Microsoft is trying to get back into the smartphone market. The more the merrier in my opinion; I love Android too much to switch anytime soon but think that the more choice that the consumer has the better it is for everyone. I used WM back in the day and it had some really awesome aspects to it, so it’s nice to Microsoft keeping its toe in the door.

Talking of doors, Rim and its Blackberry OS. I think the door is closing as we move into 2012. From personal experience it is clear to see that Rim is loosing market share. Putting graphs, data and pie charts to one-side and looking at my friend group it is pretty apparent. Granted this is one demographic of publicly educated predominantly British teenagers, but it shows a pretty clear trend. Four years ago BlackBerrys were “cool” BBM was everywhere and Blackberry was the place to be. The odd person had an iPhone but they were generally considered to be more of a PSP or iPod alternative for the rich kids, BlackBerrys were for the uber sociable average teen. The two of us with Android phones, two HTC Heroes back in the day, were thought pretty alternative and individual. However fast-forward to the present day and everyone I know who had a Blackberry has either got rid of it and migrated to the iPhone or Android, or has got a Blackberry purely for BBM but a cheap ‘throw-away’ phone for everyday use as their Blackberry just isn’t reliable or robust enough. This is where it has been for all of 2011, and despite releasing the odd new handset RIM has failed to make any drastic changes or improvements to Blackberry and I think it is probably on the way out. At risk of sounding sage and whimsical I think that this time next year Blackberry will either be floundering in it’s last throws or gone the same way as WebOS; HTC built Blackberry phone anyone?

And finally Android. This has been Android’s year, no doubt about it. We’ve seen dual-core, had a little taste of quad-core, been dazzled by 720p HD screens and generally had a great time. I currently use an SGS2 and, I always say this when I have a new phone, but if I wasn’t a geek I would have no desire to upgrade it for a few years. I think it is the best phone on the planet right now, it’s light and fast with a gorgeous screen, what else do you want on a phone? I’m obviously something of a fan-boy boy but this year Android has grown at a huge rate, phones and tablets have become more powerful than anyone could have foreseen at the start of 2011, and the updates Google has made has kept the OS at the top of its game. Google have worked wonders with the market, integrating Google Music and tidying up the front end on both portable devices and in browser. ICS, though far from perfect, is a great update to android, the UI looks slick and the whole OS looks much more streamlined and unified. The soft buttons could be a good thing in future iterations of the OS, but I think their need to be a few changes to make me really want a phone with no hardware buttons. But on the whole I think the update has struck all the right notes. Role on ICS for the SGS2!

To sum up: I think RIM is going down; Apple will have to do something brilliant in the new year (and stop suing people); Android is marching smartly on and I look forward to seeing how WP7 continues to evolve over 2012.

Android 4.0 otherwise know as ice cream sandwich is the latest version of the Android operating system that launched with the Galaxy Nexus. The video is aimed at giving you a guided tour of the operating system, showing you changes that have been made through out the system, From the new facial recognition lock screen to the new additives to the browser and notification bar.

This video should also be helpful to Nexus S user, as you will be receiving the update the update to Android 4.0 ice cream sandwich in the coming days.

So far I like what I see with Android 4.0, it feel like a more polished user experience.  it looks like Google has understood what mistakes it made with Android 3.0 and adapted it success from Android 2.3 to combine in creating this latest O.S upgrade. The truth here is Android 4.0 is and feels like a well fleshed out and polish version of Android 3.0. Which is a good thing here. One of the major keynotes here is battery life, which all Android devices struggle with. From the looks of things here, Android 4.0 has greatly improved the situation and has brought in better battery management and longer battery hours.

The Verge was informed that this model in picture of the BlackBerry London is merely a dummy unit, although the actual device is alleged to contain a 1.5GHz dual-core TI OMAP processor with 1GB of RAM and 16GB of on-board storage. An 8-megapixel rear camera is also said to be in the mix, along with a 2-megapixel front-facing shooter and a June 2012 release date. The London is reportedly “thinner than the iPhone 4″ and roughly the same size as a Galaxy SII, and can be stood up right  The London is in development in favor over the Blackberry colt, which was scrapped . we wont be seeing this device for a while, who knows  what’s going on the Blackberry.

Nokia has testing facilities world wide that ensure all their products get tested to their highest standards. Last week in San Diego we got a chance to check out the companies testing facilities. Sorry no Windows Phones where in sight which was a bummer. But this facility is one of the main facilities that handles Windows phone design and testing. so you could see we when to the birth place of windows phone.

at the San Diego facility we got to meet new Nokia America President Chris Weber, who gave us some insights as to what the facility did testing wise, looking at the mechanical aspects of a phone, the environmental  as well as what causes defects to a said device and how that issue can be solved. Yes we did press for Windows Phone information, but as you would expect he was tight lipped about it and even hinted at what was confirmed by Microsoft Andy Lee that we will see Nokia Windows phones at Nokia World in the UK on Oct 26th. enjoy the video

The facility as I mentioned does testing in 3 phase:

Mechanical testing- This is where the phones are put through rigors of daily wear and tear, on the hinges, folds, camera shutter, and much more. Also testing its resistance and durability to drops and extreme forces

Environmental Testing: Here the devices are tested on the effect of extreme temperature both hot and cold, as well as water damage testing. Even to dust resistance,  where the device is put into a bouncing box to is if dust enters inside the device.

Defect Analysis: This lab focuses and finding out the cause of a defect or where certain aspects of a device failed to meet Nokia’s standards. Here they use, microscope to look a micro details in defects, 3D X-rays to analyze different failures and energy dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy to do a full element analysis of the materials used within a device.

Hope this gives you a good idea of what steps Nokia, takes in ensure their devices are of the highest quality standard.

Mark you calanders folks on Oct. 11th 2011  Samsung has declared that “Something BIG is coming” at their Live unpacked event at CTIA 2011. This of course is referring to the rumored launch of the Nexus Prime. The latest in the Nexus line of Smartphones from Google and hardware manufacturer Samsung. The Nexus Prime is rumored top have Optimus prime class specs and Android ice cream Sandwich.

We saw the leaked about 30 mins before the start of the conference. Apple has just announced the iPhone 4S. On the outside the 4S looks exactly like its predecessor, but on the the inside its got an updated camera app, running iOS5, An A5 dual-core cpu, 7x faster than previous iPhone on gaming. Same 3.5" Retina display. Data can now download up to 2x as fast. Theoretical max performance used to be 5.8 up and 7.2 down — now doubles to almost 14.4Mbps down. HSPA+ device. as well as CDMA A Worldphone.

IOS5 enhancements

Mail enhancements: PC-free. “We have a lot of customers who want to use the iPad or iPhone as their only device.” Well, now you can, and it ain’t too shabby. “These are just ten of the new features in iOS 5.”

Siri- The intelligent assistant: “Compose and dictate email right to Siri. Set timers. Look up contacts, create notes, search the web, search Wikipedia. It’s absolutely blow-away. Well, who is Siri? Just ask!” Siri: “I am a humble personal assistant.”

iCloud_ Backup: daily backups from your iOS devices, “easily restored right from iCloud.” I’m not so sure about this one, I kind of like owning my backups, you know? Next: syncing contacts, calendars, mail — an ad-free me.com mail account. Find My iPhone is part of iCloud

iTunes Match service — again, review from past announcements. Granted, it’s not out yet, but you’ve probably heard about it by now. “It scans and matches your library against our 20m songs, we’ll upload what we don’t find, we’ll stream…” wait, did he just say stream? I don’t think he meant to say stream.

It looks like the Apple Store jumped the gun and posted up picks of the iPhone 4S, which looks like an iPhone 4 running iOS 5. The Japanese Apple site posted the image and has since been taken down. with an expedited release date of Oct. 14th. No word on LTE, or what network other than the safe assumption is coming to AT&T & Verizon. We still have about a half hour to go. So we should get confirmation of this soon.

Apple designs Macs, the best personal computers in the world, along with OS X, iLife, iWork and professional software. Apple leads the digital music revolution with its iPods and iTunes online store. Apple has reinvented the mobile phone with its revolutionary iPhone and App Store, and has recently introduced iPad 2 which is defining the future of mobile media and

Microsoft and Samsung have announced that they have signed a cross-licensing agreement, meaning each is able to use the other’s patented licences. Moreover, the agreement included Samsung’s commitment to continue producing Windows Phone devices, and Samsung will pay Microsoft royalties on all Android tablets and handsets it sells. Microsoft also has similar agreements with ViewSonic, HTC and Acer.

It’s an interesting development, primarily because the deal between Nokia and Microsoft was supposed to be ‘exclusive’, but Microsoft is now signing new agreements with other handset manufacturers for them to give access to their portfolio and create WP7 devices, which is strikingly similar to Nokia’s deal. It leads to wondering what problems this will cause for Nokia now that it will not be the only company to have access to Microsoft’s portfolio for software development and also that other companies will continue to make Windows Phone devices in conjunction with other operating systems – by dropping Maemo, MeeGo and soon Symbian, Nokia will be producing only WP7 and S40 devices, while Samsung has Tizen, Bada, Android and Windows Phone. It appears that Microsoft is well aware no one is buying its latest incarnation of phone offerings and is binding all the manufacturers it can to agree to try to shift it.

The major focus, though, rests on Android. With Samsung having access to Microsoft’s patent portfolio, it must now pay Microsoft on each Android tablet and handset it sells, just as HTC does. Microsoft have played a shrewd game here and it may not be long before it simply has to sit back and watch the money pour in, because with the world’s most noted handset manufacturers Nokia, Samsung and HTC producing its phones, and it receiving royalties from the majority of Android phones being sold, there’s little chance of it losing. And even if Windows Phone continues to be a bottom-feeder in the marketshare arena, Microsoft still rakes in the cash with Android royalties.

Plantronics just announced the Marquee M155 which is the company’s smallest and lightest Bluetooth headset. , at just 7grams it is designed specifically for Android and iOS phones ( though compatible with other devices). The M155 offers voice-guided pairing assistance, customized apps and the ability to answer or ignore calls with verbal commands. Also user of the M155 will receive a one-year subscription to the company’s Vocalyst service, which offers the ability to send email, update Twitter, check the weather, listen to news feeds and more — all hands free. The Marque M155 Retails for $60 and pre-orders can be taken off Amazon or through the company’s site

Yes, fellow T-Mobile customers. The Samsung Galaxy SII is finally going to land on the carrier Oct.12. The devices doesn’t house Samsung’s Exynos processor, but a dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S3 processor clocked at 1.5Ghz. It also takes advantage of T-Mobiles 42Mbps HSPA+ Network. AT&T has announced the release date of the Samsung Galaxy S II on their network to be Oct 2nd, @ 4199 with a 2 year contract. The AT&T version of the Samsung galaxy S II closes resembles the international version of the Samsung Galaxy S II; with a 4.3” Super AMOLED pus display, 1.2Ghz Exons processor, 2MP front facing camera with an 8MP camera in the rear with LED flash and records at 1080p, NFC enabled also. It also will be 4G capable on AT&T HSPA+ network. We went hands-on with the device last month during the Samsung Galaxy S II US Launch. So stay tuned for our full review soon.
