Response to Apple’s Blackberry Antenna Signal Test with two Blackberry Bold II

Snapshot(85)

In light of ’s statement today, that Physics is the cause for the antenna signal loss with the new iPhone and not a design flaw; and the same signal failure can be noted on other smartphones such as the bold. so we decided to put this to the test. with two Bolds. A CDMA version ( Verizon & GSM (AT&T). Please watch the video and be the judge here. cause we can’t seem to replicate the same signal lose Apple claims on the .

I saw the test clip from Apple, I saw your test clip and I also tested by Nokia N86 regarding grip and signal loss. Here are my opinions:

    1. Apple’s tests: the used grips are kind of unnatural, the phones are held strongly in such a manner that the palm is stuck to the antenna area of each phone. I suspect that in the case of iPhone 4, you don’t really need to do that strong grip, but simply touch the lower left plastic separator, but that is just a suspicion. I cannot say anything until I actually touch an iPhone 4 (I won’t buy, too expensive, not because I cannot afford, but because I don’t need it and I prefer buttons to touchscreens).

    2. Your tests: the grip is natural, you do not glue the palm to the antenna area. As I said above, you need a firm, unnatural grip, like you want to “hug” the lower part of the phone, where the antenna is. There are small differences between your grip and their grip, small differences that can make a big difference in terms of “signal loss” (and also, marketing).

    3. My tests: using your grip, I lost a signal bar on my N86 (3G network). Using a strong grip, in the GSM antenna area of the phone, I lost all the bars in about 20 seconds. As soon as I returned to your grip, all the bars came back.

As a personal opinion, since I have not touched and tested an iPhone 4, I think that having an external antenna is a bad idea, because touching it affects the signal strength. Until I actually touch the iPhone myself, to test it as I tested my N86, I cannot say that I am convinced by Apple’s tests or your tests.
